Reviewer Comments: Gavin Carmichael and Daisy Lake made a pact with their fellows, Roarke and Harry, when they were in the Roxbury House Orphanage; "Through thick and thin, forever and ever, come what may, we'll stay together..." But they didn’t stay together after all. One day after that pledge, Gavin and Daisy were torn apart. Taken away by his grandfather, Gavin swears to find Daisy again, but again doesn’t come about for another fifteen years or so. Gavin is haunted by the memory of Daisy and has hired a private investigator to track down the young woman but there are no leads to her whereabouts once she is adopted by the Lake family. It is purely by chance that Harry Stone and Patrick O’Rourke take Gavin to the Palace Song and Supper Club one evening to hear the incomparable Delilah du Lac. Gavin isn’t prepared for the shock of discovering Delilah is in reality Daisy and she has a pretty savory past.
Wicked sensuality and witty dialogue reach out to capture the reader’s attention and hold it throughout the book. Daisy and Gavin are both likeable and admirable characters; through myriad hardships they have persevered and triumphed. A character-driven story that is emotional at times, funny at others. Readers will find themselves wanting to shake the couple as they plod along, suffering through doubts; neither of them stepping up to speak their thoughts aloud. The various plot twists and turns kept this reader on her toes; anxious to get to the conclusion, yet not wanting to part ways with the marvelous cast of characters. A brilliant sense of time and place made for a journey back to Victorian England with all of its drama and pageantry. Author Hope Tarr truly has a gift for holding the readers attention throughout, while providing ample background information to avoid confusion.
